RCMP are investigating damage to a wind turbine site near Fort Macleod that they say was caused by gunshots fired from a distance.

Mounties say they responded to a complaint of damage to the TransAlta wind turbine, located south of Fort Macleod at Highway 810 and Township Rd. 74, on Feb. 9.

Investigators believe the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Feb. 8, when the company’s main station was tripped.

When they attended the site, RCMP discovered several bullet holes in one of the transformers for the wind turbines. They say it appears the shots were possibly fired from the nearby roadway.

Damage to the transformer is “extensive” and is expected to result in significant financial loss due to the shutdown of several wind turbines as a result of the incident.

Anyone who witnessed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Highway 810 and Township Rd. 74 on Feb. 8 at about 6 p.m. is being asked to contact Fort Macleod RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
